I am so glad I found this site. I am 39yrs old, have not been on the pill for over eight years, have not practiced birth control and have not gotten pregnant. The frequency and timing of my periods is eerily regular for which I am grateful. However, for approximately the past 3 yrs my periods have been very heavy, and clotty (is that even a word?). It is strange because for about 3 days before the "flooding" starts, I have a discharge of what I can only describe as old blood. It is very dark in color - almost brown and has a dry texture or consistency. A few days later, the flooding begins with tons of clots. I can actually feel some of the clots as they pass through. I can completely saturate a super overnight pad in 3hrs. I am afraid to laugh, sneeze, cough or even take a deep breath for fear of exploding and ruining my clothes and anything I may be sitting on. I have more cramping than I use to but it is not terrible. Sometimes the crapping is not in my abdomen as much as it feels like my cervix is going to drop out. The periods only last about 7 days with heavy bleeding for only about 4 or 5 days. This might be way too much information, but the odor has even changed - it is stronger and more pungent. I had a sonogram and the doctor mentioned that the lining of my uterus was abnormally thick. After numerous visits and much discussion she suggested an ablation but wanted to ensure proper birth control first so I had a tubal ligation in May. There was a possibility that the tubal ligation would reduce my periods but it has not. I am ready to schedule the ablation and am not as concerned about the surgery as I am the actual cause of the bleeding. I just want to be sure there is nothing more serious causing it.
