I had a Novasure ablation done on 5/14/09 as an outpatient. Excellent experience with minimal cramps discomfort that went away after 1 pain killer. Had my 2 week check up today and the doctor is "very optimistic" about my results. I am 50 years old and have a good sized submucosal fibroid. I am at day 27 of my cycle now and the doctor said if I am going to get a period post ablation it should be soon.

I am noticing my belly is kind of bloated. Pants a little tight to zip. Is this normal? My doctor said if the ablation does not take care of my heavy periods, (I have been hemorrhaging for about 4 years with clots lately the size of tennis balls) I will need a hysterectomy. Had to go to the ER 3 weeks ago because of extreme bleeding, huge clots and almost passing out. Red blood count dropped from 42 to 27. Has anyone had successful results with novasure having fibroids?

When the fibroids are submucosal, then Novasure has a fair chance of success. It is less so if there are multiple or large internal fibroids, which make it easy to miss large pockets of the endometrium. It won't cure your fibroid, but it still has a good chance of reducing your bleeding.

The bloating is pretty normal, and will probably subside after your cycle, whether or not you bleed. Keep getting plenty of fluids, and avoid salt as much as possible. If you do have a bloodless cycle, and are still bloated, you might try a mild diuretic.

Thanks so much! I am on what would be day 28 of my cycle and the doctor said if I am going to get a period it would be any time now. I kind of emotionally feel like one is coming on, (emotional, and bloated and today low back pain) but I sure hope it is a light one if it does come.

So I can get the actual symptoms like a flow will start but maybe not get an actual flow? Will this continue each month until menopause? My doctor showed me my hysteroscopy pics yesterday and showed me the results of the ablation and how the entire uterus over the fibroid as well was affected. He is very optimistic it will work for me.

I honestly don't care if I get light periods still, I just can't physically take the hemorrhaging anymore. (4 years) It was to the point of almost passing out (more than once) while I was working on a client. (I am a massage therapist). In one flow my blood count RBC went from 42 to 27 and I was borderline needing a transfussion.

I am having a Novasure sometime in July (waiting for dr.'s office to call for exact date, also waiting until after vacation). Besides the bloating what other things can I expect (if it's not too personal)? I really like to be prepared. My gyn also put me on Provera until after the procedure so I don't bleed all during my vacation.

Patty - yes, you can get an "everything but the blood" period. They're not uncommon during the first 3-6 months, if you continue to be bloodless, the phantom PMS should diminish. And remember, if this first period includes bleeding, don't worry on it - the flow level at your first period is not indicative of your eventual results.

Jacble - Try reviewing the pre-op and post-op tips that are on the right side bar of the page. They give you a lot of info about what to expect. Each experience is unique, but some things like bloat, discharge and tiredness are common. The first three days are usually days you need to rest, then you can expect to be back to most everything within 2 weeks.

I'm almost two weeks after my ablation, and it's disappointing. I had four large fibroids, and he did a uterine myomectomy to shave those down before he did the ablation.

Within the first week I gained 8 lbs. Since I journal my food and only eat 1300 calories/day, I can only assume this is water weight. It's all in my belly, and i feel stretched and uncomfortable.

Then on day 11 I started my period. It's not the crime scene that it used to be, but it is heavy with a few clots. I just want to cry. My period is still going, and I have cramping and I'm tired and feel swollen and wish now I'd never had the procedure done because it doesn't seem to have helped and only made me feel worse.

I know you feel disappointed right now, but hang in there. Bloating is normal. 8 pounds does seem like a lot, but I didn't go through that, so I don't know how to compare it. My first three PAP's were not that much better than pre-ablation. I was excited because there was a small difference, but disappointed because it wasn't THAT different. By my 4th PAP, there was noticeable improvement. By my 6th, I estimate that I had a 90% decrease in volume, almost no clotting at all, and the number of days I bled had been cut in half. There is still hope.
A friend of mine who had it done was so disappointed in her initial results (the discharge that goes on for what seems like forever), that she was mad at me for suggesting that she talk to her doctor about it. However, once the discharge stopped, she hasn't bled a single day since then. Her procedure was last September.
There is still hope. Hang in there.
