I am almost 40 and mother to 3 kids, 18, 16 and 6. After giving birth the last time in 2003, I had a tubal ligation. My periods steadily began to get extremely heavy and out of control. Gyno put me on birth control pills, which helped with heavy bleeding, but I was constantly spotting which, after 5 years, didn't make for a very exciting sex life. She suggested I get the endometrial ablation to control my bleeding, which I had in mid December of 2008. I had the Novasure procedure with a D & C as an outpatient in the hospital.
Upon waking, no pain, but later that evening and in the days to follow... severe cramping requiring narcotic pain killers. I noticed an awful odor, which I thought was normal, in those days that followed. At my 4 week checkup, gyno scolded me that I didn't call or come in because the odor most likely meant an infection, but the smell went away after several days, so I didn't worry. Pain and cramps slowly disappeared after a couple of weeks.
After 4 weeks I was still getting the watery blood tinted discharge, but gyno said that was typical. At six weeks, no more discharge or blood. I started my period (very very light spotting) a couple weeks after that with no cramps.
Next period, I developed quite severe cramps, but again very very light spotting. Hardly any bleeding was awesome, but the cramping was almost unbearable. Gyno prescribed stronger pain killers (Vicodin) which helped, but I was upset that I needed anything, so she scheduled a vaginal ultrasound.
Ultrasound found a small cyst on each ovary and a small uterine fibroid. All too small to cause concern... or pain. But I was still cramping. Gyno told me to wait it out a couple months and that the cysts should go away on their own.
Each subsequent period from that month until April 2009's period caused more and more painful cramping during periods (still only spotting!). In April, I ended up getting another ultrasound by my family practioner who found that the cysts had both doubled in size, as well as the fibroid... and also found fluid in one of my fallopian tubes, most likely causing the pain. Ended up that month's period in the ER. They sent me home with a shot of Dilaudid and told me to talk to my gyno about my problems. *sigh*
Research on my part found that this fluid in the tubes is known as Post Ablation Tubal Ligation Syndrome, which is found in women who have had a previous tubal ligation and then later have the endometrial ablation done. This causes tremendous pain but is very rare! I was sure this was what I had.
Went to a new gyno with my findings, who brushed me off like I didn't know what I was talking about. He suggested another endometrial ablation or a hysterectomy and sent me home with a prescription for Percocet. I was furious!
Thank god in the past two months that followed, the pain during my periods has deminished. I am wondering if the cysts or even the tubes burst, causing that last trip to the ER and then healed afterwards. It's weird, I have no pain now.
But.... this month's period, june 2009, I had no pain, barely any blood. After several days of ending my period, I got up after eating dinner and thought I had lost control of my bladder! It almost felt like my water breaking during labor!
I ran to the bathroom, it was blood, everywhere! Gushing out of me like a stream of pee. I started to panic and called for daughter to bring me a pad. I put it on and stood up pulling my pants up and I had soaked the pad within seconds! Sat back on toilet and it was still streaming out of me so I told daughter to call 911. I thought I was hemmoraging! Then, as fast as it began, it stopped. Nothing. I called 911 to cancel and they still had to come out and check on me. My blood pressure was higher than normal, but I still was not bleeding at all and haven't since. That was several days ago.
Just wonder if anyone had a similar experience? Could it have been a cyst that suddenly broke and drained? It was like a had a full period come out in a matter of minutes and then stop. Never had that happen before and wondered if any of you have.
Thanks!
