I had a roller ball ablation in June 2001 and am thrilled with the results. For the first few years, I had much lighter and shorter periods, except for one about 8 months after the ablation that was rather heavy - had me scared the ablation was failing, but it turned out to be a one time thing. My periods were only lasting about 3-4 days and for most of that time, all I needed was a panty liner. Even my cramps were almost all gone and I'd had bad cramping during periods all my life. The only negative result of it was that my breasts would get tender before my periods and I'd get minor cramps at ovulation, neither of which effect I had had in all my years of menstruating.
A few years ago, my periods got very irregular, I'd go anywhere from 3 - 9 months in between periods and the last period I had was Dec. 2008, though I had a bit of spotting last month but very light and only for a day or two, so I'm not sure if that would be considered a period or not. I think I'm in menopause - I'm 47 - or close to it. (My birthmother was through it at 48)
So, I am happy to report my experience has been a positive one. I had wanted a hysterectomy but my gyn wouldn't do one beause I'm diabetic and he said it was too high a surgical risk when a safer procedure - ablation - was available. As I was moving long distance, I didn't want to futz around with getting second opinions, I just wanted my awful bleeding stopped before the move so I went with it. I am now glad I did.
This board was very helpful to me when I was going through my horrendous bleeding and the ablation and I wish to say huge thank you to Michelle and all the posters for that. I'm happy to see the board is still around - I have referred a few people here from chatrooms, message groups etc when I've seen them talk about having heavier than normal periods or when they have been wanting information on endometrial ablation. Rock on, Michelle!
